The ‘break-up’ came as a total surprise. It was totally unexpected.
Before we invested, Nurgazy always referred to Mr. A as his brother and best friend. He portrayed the image that they were very close. They were inseparable.
One day Nurgazy called and said he needed to talk to me urgently. This sounded serious. He picked me up and we went to a café. There he told me that Mr. A no longer wants to work with him. He got emotional and started crying. I did not know what to do in that situation.
Nurgazy then asked for my assistance. He wanted me to talk to Mr. A and convince him to change his mind. I said I will meet him and see what he has to say. I was not going to convince him to reconsider the ‘break-up’.
The following day I met Mr. A at GoodCoffee located on Toklok Moldo. This used to be one of Nurgazy’s favourite hangouts. Mr. A does not speak English, and I don’t speak Russian. Nurgazy offered to be there as a translator. I declined, and instead asked a colleague to join me.
Mr. A explained why he did not want to continue working with Nurgazy. I cannot explain now what he told me. Even after the meeting, I did not quite understand his perspective. I can only speculate the real reason why he wanted to stop working with Nurgazy. In hindsight, I think if if Mr. A continued working with Nurgazy, either:
• The problems we faced with the investment would not have arisen, or
• He would have been named in the criminal case and would have participated in all the investigations to date.
The ‘break-up’ was going ahead. After they split, Mr. A kept the factory at Novopokrovka while Nurgazy started a new factory at Kirshelk. They distributed the equipment and staff. I cannot share details as I was not involved with this process.
Note: A criminal case is currently open. These are two most recent letters I received from the prosecutor.
